Understanding Thailand's Entry System
Thailand's entry system involves two different government agencies with distinct roles:
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) & Embassies/Consulates: Issue visas before travel
- Immigration Bureau: Controls entry, extensions, and stay conditions within Thailand

Which Entry Type Fits Your Needs?
Short-term Tourism (up to 90 days)
- Visa exemption: Check the dated MFA nationality list; do not infer eligibility or duration from a region
- Need longer than the current entry permission: Check the Tourist Visa requirements and current extension guidance
- Visa on Arrival: Treat this as a separate passport-specific route and verify its current list, stay period, documents and fee
Business & Work
- Short business trips: Visa-exempt or Tourist Visa (no work permitted)
- Work in Thailand: Non-Immigrant B visa + work permit required
- Skilled professionals: Consider SMART Visa for eligible industries
Study & Education
- Language schools/universities: Non-Immigrant ED visa required
- Duration: Matches course length with regular extensions
Family & Retirement
- Thai spouse/family: Non-Immigrant O visa
- Retirement (50+ years): Non-Immigrant O-A or O-X visa
- Wealthy retirees: Consider LTR Visa (Wealthy Pensioner category)
Long-term Residence
- Digital nomads/remote workers: LTR Visa (Work-from-Thailand Professional)
- High net worth individuals: LTR Visa (Wealthy Global Citizen)
- Tech/targeted industries: SMART Visa
Application Channels
1. Thai e-Visa System (Recommended)
- Website: thaievisa.go.th
- Availability: Global rollout effective January 1, 2025
- Processing: 3-15 working days depending on visa type
- Payment: Online credit card payment
2. Embassy/Consulate Application
- When to use: e-Visa not available or specific consular requirements
- Processing: Varies by location (3-30 working days)
- Payment: Cash, money order, or certified check (varies by mission)

Essential Documents

Financial Requirements
- Tourist visas: ฿10,000-20,000 equivalent cash/bank statements
- Non-immigrant visas: ฿20,000-800,000+ depending on type and purpose
- LTR/SMART visas: Significant income/investment thresholds
After Arrival in Thailand
Mandatory for Long-term Stays (90+ days)
- 90-day reporting: Report address every 90 days to Immigration
- TM.30 form: Property owner must report foreign guest stays
- Re-entry permit: Required if leaving Thailand to maintain visa status
Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
TDAC has been mandatory since 1 May 2025 for non-Thai nationals entering Thailand by air, land or sea. Submit a new TDAC for each entry through the free official Immigration Bureau portal at tdac.immigration.go.th within the three days before arrival, including the arrival date. The current official FAQ exempts passengers who transit or transfer without passing through immigration and crew entering in the course of their duties. Children are included. Current visa-exemption rule and pending change
The MFA’s current published scheme grants up to 60 days to 93 listed countries and territories from 15 July 2024. Cabinet approved a replacement scheme in May 2026, but it is announced—not yet effective: Consular Affairs says it starts only after implementing Ministry of Interior notices are published in the Royal Gazette and 15 days have elapsed. A verified commencement date has not been established. Check the current MFA list and pending-change status immediately before travel.
Important Notes
- No work permitted on tourist visas (visa-exempt, VOA, TR)
- Overstay penalties: ฿500/day, potential entry bans for extended overstays
- Multiple entries: Check if your visa allows multiple entries or requires re-entry permit
- Embassy variations: Document requirements may vary between Thai missions
