Current visa-exemption baseline
The MFA’s current published scheme grants up to 60 days to 93 listed countries and territories from 15 July 2024. A replacement was approved in May 2026 but is announced—not yet effective: Consular Affairs says it starts only after implementing Ministry of Interior notices are published in the Royal Gazette and 15 days have elapsed. A verified commencement date has not been established. Check the current MFA list immediately before travel and see the current exemption guide.
Can I extend my current permission to stay?
Extension eligibility depends on the permission actually held, current Immigration policy and the individual case. Check the permitted-until date and obtain the current form, evidence, fee and office instructions directly from Immigration before relying on an extension.
Do I need onward travel or financial evidence?
Requirements depend on the entry route, issuing post, carrier and border assessment. Check the current official checklist and carrier rules for the specific journey. This page does not state a universal ticket format, cash amount or balance threshold.
What is the difference between a tourist visa, visa exemption and Visa on Arrival?
They are separate entry routes with passport-specific eligibility and conditions. A tourist visa is applied for before travel; exemption and Visa on Arrival depend on the current nationality lists and conditions. Check Consular Affairs and the responsible issuing post rather than relying on an old duration or fee table.
Can I work or conduct business on tourist entry?
Tourist entry does not itself establish permission to work. Whether a particular activity requires authorization is fact-specific. Confirm the current visa and work-authorization position with the Department of Employment or a qualified Thai professional before performing work. This page does not publish penalty amounts or absolute activity lists.
Who must complete 90-day reporting?
Immigration reporting depends on continuous stay and current status. Check the current Immigration Bureau instructions and use only the official reporting channel linked by Immigration. Do not rely on a general list of visa labels as a substitute for the current rule.
How early should I apply or how long will processing take?
There is no universal processing period. The responsible issuing post or Immigration office controls its submission window, appointment process and estimate. Allow contingency time and avoid non-refundable commitments based only on a website estimate.
What are the current retirement, LTR and SMART options?
Criteria, financial evidence, insurance and program categories can change. Use the current LTR portal, SMART Visa portal, e-Visa service and responsible Thai mission. This FAQ intentionally does not reproduce legacy category matrices, insurance thresholds or financial figures.
Is insurance required for my visa?
Check the current requirements for the exact visa or permission with its issuing authority before buying cover. Do not assume an older O-A, O-X, LTR or other threshold remains current. An insurer’s certificate does not guarantee that an immigration authority will accept it.
Should I use e-Visa or contact an embassy?
Start with the official Thai e-Visa portal, which identifies the responsible post and available route. Follow the post’s official instructions if the application cannot be completed through e-Visa.
Can I apply for a new visa from inside Thailand?
Application, status-change and extension routes are distinct and case-specific. Check the current Immigration or issuing-authority procedure for the route sought; do not assume a general in-country or out-of-country rule from this FAQ.
