Opening a Thai Bank Account: A Foreign-Customer Workflow
No cross-bank checklist or account-opening outcome is guaranteed. Ask the selected bank for the current checklist for the exact product, branch or channel, nationality and residence position, and intended use. Expect identity, immigration or residence, address, tax-residency and purpose or source information, but do not treat this guide as an eligibility checklist.
Workflow
- Define the intended use: salary, daily payments, savings, business, property evidence or foreign-currency holding.
- Select a specific bank and product from its official site. The neutral bank directory links to first-party pages without ranking products.
- Ask the intended branch or channel for the current foreign-customer checklist, supported immigration or residence status, tax-residency forms, opening deposit, card and app availability, fees and appointment requirements.
- Bring original documents requested by that bank. Do not send identity or financial records through Thailand Expat Services.
- Read the terms for the account, card, app, PromptPay, foreign exchange and dormant or inactive accounts before acceptance.
- Keep the bank's application or reference and obtain separate qualified advice for immigration, tax, business or property evidence.
A bank can request more information, restrict channels or decline an application. Thailand Expat Services does not determine eligibility or guarantee opening.
Transaction-specific evidence
If the account supports a visa, employment, business or property transaction, ask both the bank and the competent authority what evidence must be in whose name and when. For property funds, confirm currency, purpose wording, receiving account and which transaction record the receiving bank can issue before sending; seek independent qualified Thai property advice.
The bank may request tax-residency and taxpayer-identification self-certification under applicable reporting rules. US-person/FATCA treatment is status-specific. Seek qualified tax advice if unsure.
Cards, PromptPay and ongoing checks
Card availability, identity checks, delivery or collection and timing depend on the product, branch and bank. Ask whether the account is eligible for PromptPay and which identifier or phone-registration conditions apply. The bank may require updated identity or biometric verification and can set channel or transaction limits. Confirm current requirements in the official app or branch and never bypass controls.
For every cost, use the selected product's current minimum-opening-deposit, card, account, transfer, foreign-exchange and dormancy tariff. A live transaction screen or bank quote controls; this page does not publish market-wide fee or timing ranges.
Statement, certificate and dormant-account safeguards
BOT standards effective 1 July 2026 apply to specified deposit-account services. For natural-person and SME customers, a paper deposit statement covering up to 12 months is capped at THB 100 per account per request, plus actual delivery cost where requested; a qualifying reliable electronic statement covering up to 12 months carries no fee. A standard financial-status certificate is capped at THB 100 per set per request, plus actual delivery. Customized statements, credit confirmations, audit confirmations and other excluded documents are not covered by those standard-document caps.
For natural-person customers, a monthly dormant-account maintenance fee may be charged under this standard only where a Thai-baht deposit balance is no more than THB 2,000 and the account has been inactive for more than one year, with a maximum of THB 20 per month. Other low-balance product conditions require their own tariff check. These rules do not determine whether an account can be opened or maintained for a particular customer.
Common failure points
- relying on a checklist for a different product, branch or customer profile;
- assuming a visa, property, employment or marriage document guarantees an account;
- travelling without confirming branch hours and appointments;
- sending sensitive documents through a general enquiry form;
- treating a bank's request for additional information as a universal rule; and
- accepting account, card, app or FX terms without reading the current tariff.
Before you enquire
Banking products, eligibility, documents, fees, limits, exchange rates and processing depend on the identified institution, channel, customer profile and transaction. Confirm current terms directly with the provider before acting. Thailand Expat Services provides general information and enquiry/referral coordination only; it does not open accounts, execute transfers, choose financial products, provide regulated financial advice or certify AML/KYC, tax, property or legal compliance. Any fee, commission, affiliate payment or other commercial relationship will be disclosed before you accept an introduction or we transfer contact details. Do not send passport scans, bank records, passwords, PINs, authentication codes or payment-card details through a general enquiry form.
